The group had said earlier on Friday that it had launched production of a pilot batch of the cars, called the Siber, Prime-Tass reported.

GAZ Group plans to produce 500 test units and 14,000 for sale this year, Dolgov told Prime-Tass. The first commercial batch is expected by the end of June, he added.

The group plans to increase output to 45,000 units in 2009 and to 65,000 units in 2010, Dolgov said.

GAZ concluded an agreement to buy assembly equipment and tooling for the production of these two models from DaimlerChrysler back in April 2006.

The car is expected to cost the equivalent of about US$18,000, the group said earlier, according to Prime-Tass.
