Russian car output rose 4.1% year on year in the first three months to 254,000 units, according to data from Russia’s Economic Development and Trade Ministry, reported by the Prime-Tass news agency.

The growth was attributed to foreign automakers, which increased volume by 43.7%.


Of the Russian assemblers, production at Russia’s Rostov Region-based Taganrog Automobile Plant, or TagAZ, increased 51.1% year on year in the period, while production at Russia’s largest manufacturer AvtoVAZ, rose 3%. GAZ, Russia’s second largest manufacturer, increased 5.6%.


Output at the Small Car Plant, or ZMA, fell 48% and at the Serpukhov Automobile Plant, or SeAZ, output fell 33.6% , with both plants phasing out the production of the Oka compact car model.


Truck output in Russia rose 20.7% to 50,200 units in January-March, according to Prime-Tass.


GAZ truck output was up 24.6% while production at Kamaz increased 38.5% on the year. Truck output fell 26.1% at GM-AvtoVAZ and Avtotor saw its truck production decrease 39.5%.


In 2005, car output in Russia fell to 1.068m vehicles from 1.110m vehicles in 2004, while truck output rose to 206,779 units from 202,356 units.
