Sales of imported cars in Romania doubled in the first half of this year, due to a boost by lower customs duties on imports from the European Union (EU).

Romania’s customs duties on EU cars dropped to 12 percent from 30 percent on January 1 2000. The duties are scheduled to be cut by another 6 percent as of January 1, 2001, and will be completely abolished beginning in 2002.
