BBC News Online reports that Romanian car plant workers are planning to sell their sperm in order to reduce their financially troubled company’s debt and save their jobs.

The report says that about 100 workers at a car factory in Campulung, central Romania, are planning to sell sperm to a fertility clinic to try to reduce their company’s debt.
Local media reports say that a clinic in the western city of Timisoara is offering donors the equivalent of $US50 per donation – almost two-thirds of the workers’ $80 monthly wage.
The BBC report adds that the ARO Campulung car plant, which produces SUVs, has more than 5,000 employees and millions of dollars worth of debt.
According to the BBC, car factory officials would only comment that the scheme was ‘shameful’.
The BBC report also suggests that there is a protest element in the workers’ sperm donation scheme which arises from dissatisfaction with the government’s failed attempts to find outside investment for the plant.
