Ford of Britain said over 60,000 prospective buyers have configured a Canadian-made (Oakville, Ontario) Edge since January 2016 while right-hand-drive production has just begun.

Ford data shows the flagship Sport model as the most popular choice, making up 49% of the configurations, while just 11% were for the entry Zetecs. Over 55% specified the 210PS two-litre TDCi diesel engine with automatic transmission and the most popular colours were Oxford White (16%), Shadow Black (14%) and Electric Spice (8%). The average price of Edge models configured for the UK was over GBP35,000.

This is the second new right hand drive North American Ford to be offered recently in the UK – the world’s largest RHD market – after the Mustang launched last year with EcoBoost 2.3 I4 and five-litre V8 power. The RHD sportscar, not built factory RHD for its first half century (though Ford did sell a batch of factory-authorised converted cars in Australia around 2000), has been a sell-out success in the UK and other markets, including Australia, where an extra production allocation was recently secured.

Ford has previously offered factory-RHD Cougar and predecessor Probe coupes in the UK while RHD Taurus sedans and wagons were offered briefly in Japan and some Asia-Pacific markets in the mid-90s, along with RHD Explorers which were available into the early 2000s.

The Edge, effectively a large-SUV replacement for the Explorer in RHD markets, is offered in England in Zetec, Titanium and Sport series – and with a choice of the 180PS two-litre TDCi diesel engine with six-speed manual transmission or 210PS bi-turbo two-litre TDCi diesel with six-speed PowerShift (twin clutch) automatic transmission.

Standard equipment includes intelligent all-wheel drive, active noise control, pedestrian detection, DAB (digital) radio with SYNC connectivity, privacy glass and 19in alloy wheels.

Optional features include adaptive steering, which automatically optimises the steering response according to vehicle speed, making it easy to manoeuvre at low speeds, while remaining precise and intuitive at higher speeds; and front wide view camera, which makes restricted visibility junctions or parking spaces easier to negotiate.

The RHD Edge reaches UK dealers this summer priced from GBP29,995 – supplementing the Kuga ‘family-sized’ SUV from GBP19,995 and EcoSport compact SUV from GBP14,445 in Ford Britain’s widening SUV model range.

As with JATO’s earlier analysis of the five largest national markets in Europe, the SUV segment was the biggest first quarter 2016 growth driver across all of Europe with registrations accounting for 25% of sales in March and Q1 2016, an improvement on the 21.7% share this segment registered in March 2015 and during the first quarter of last year. B-Segment (subcompact cars) and MPVs suffered most, posting the highest market share loss.
