Competition in Brazil's compact pick-up segment –  currently between the Fiat Strada, VW Saveiro, Chevrolet Montana and the beefed-up Renault Duster Oroch – is set to be fiercer from now on.

Despite being populated by only four model lines, this is Brazil's third largest segment, after compacts and midsize compacts (27 saloon and hatchback lines).

Over the past years the Strada, with its regular, king, and three-door crew cabs, has taken 50% of sales. The arrival of Renault's four-door (Dacia) Oroch started to change the scenario. Now, the updated 2017 Saveiro, in showrooms in April, promises another challenge to the established order.

For the first time since launch in 1982, VW has given the pickup an exclusive design identity distinct from the related Gol and Voyage. The nose is clearly changed, just two doors for all versions are retained, but the crew cab offers more rear seat room than the Strada, despite the unwieldy accessibility.

A new dashboard, instrument cluster and steering wheel, matched to plusher finishing materials, provide a modern look unknown in the segment. This extends to the four infotainment systems offered. A useful removable, dash-mounted mobile phone dock makes screen reading easier and this includes a USB plug.

The Saveiro is unique in featuring four-wheel disc brakes. Electronic aids like ABS mode for dirt road braking and hill start assist have been added. It also features electronic stability/traction controls and electronic brake differential which acts automatically on the driving wheel with no traction.

Ride height was raised by 1.5 cm/0.6 in. At the same time, a redesigned front bumper increased entry angle, a weak aspect of the previous Saveiro when driving both over hard ground and fully loaded over speed bumps and ditches. The cargo bay door is gas-damper equipped as before (also an exclusive feature) for easy handling.

The Cross version is the only one powered by the brand's latest 1.6-litre/61 cu in aluminium block engine with double overhead camshafts, 118 bhp (on ethanol) and particularly smooth operation from idle speed up. Other versions retain the old, eight-valve, single cam 102bhp motor.

Base prices range from BRL43,430/US$11,950 to BRL69,260/$19,000.
