As Groupe PSA unveiled its global mobility strategy in Paris, chairman and CEO Carlos Tavares said he has not ruled out engineering and building cars specifically for car-sharing in the future.
In his remarks, Tavares described changing market needs and requirements for shared cars. He said: “There is no doubt that with no direct ownership, car share cars are likely to be used a bit more brutally and that will have an impact in the way we engineer our cars.

“There will also be specific expectations from those using the vehicles so we need to understand better how they are being used.
“Some products could be engineered for car-share but we have not made that decision yet.”
He added that there would also be the need to study the divergence of mobility between urban and rural areas with no one-size fits all solution. “We will have to adapt to the differences and the market will continue to fragment. We will continue to be a carmaker and a mobility provider.”
Having said earlier in his presentation that PSA was now more agile than it had ever been, Tavares was asked how that sat with the recent acquisition of Opel-Vauxhall.
“Compared to the giants in the industry we are still quite small, even with Opel,” he said.
“But Opel and Vauxhall will help us to be profitable in Europe where we will be the number two player. This will give us better leverage in other markets around the world.”
