Malaysia's first national car company Proton Holdings reported an almost 25% year on year sales increase to 11,378 units in August, the second highest monthly sales total of 2020.
The company estimated its market share for the month and the first eight months of the year to be just under 22%, a significant improvement on its performance just a few years ago.
Cumulative sales in the January-August period amounted to 61,672 units, slightly higher than the same period of last year despite a sharp decline in the second quarter due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In a statement the company said year to date sales performance was "particularly noteworthy as sales in March, April and May were affected by the Movement Control Order (MCO) to curb the rise of coronavirus infections".
"The Persona and Exora continue to lead their respective segments, with the former holding off strong challenges from rivals from foreign brands. The X70, meanwhile, remains as the best-selling SUV in Malaysia," Proton said, referring to the compact SUV based on Chinese partner Geely's Boyue.
