Posco, South Korea's top steelmaker, will hire 6,000 full-time employees from this year to 2020 in an effort to offer job opportunities and secure talent, the company said on Tuesday. 

The company will hire 1,500 workers annually for the next four years, the Korea Herald reported.

The company said the large-scale employment plan comes as the steelmaker strives to gain a lead in the 'fourth industrial revolution' by researching and developing new sources of growth such as lithium, according to the report.

To secure talent, Posco will look for potential employees in academia, former officers discharged from military service and other diverse fields. 

Posco will also boost the total value of funds created to support affiliates to KRW550bn (US$484.5m) from the current KRW500bn across 15 funds, the company said.

Posco said in May it would will boost business ties with Hyundai Motor and affiliate Kia Motors after the recent opening of a new automotive steel plant in the country.

Sales to Korea's largest and second largest automakers had been declining since 2010 when another Hyundai Group affiliate, Hyundai Steel, began producing auto steel plates for the two car making units
