Indonesian consumer electronics manufacturer PT Hartono Istana Electronic (Polytron), part of the local Djarum Group, revealed plans to enter the country’s battery electric vehicle (BEV) market, according to local reports.

The company produces a wide range of consumer electronics and household appliances, from TVs to refrigerators and air conditioning systems, and began producing battery-powered motorcycles in 2022.

According to the reports, Polytron confirmed it is in talks with an overseas vehicle manufacturer to jointly produce BEVs in the country. The company’s head of sales, Tekno Wibowo, told reporters: “We are working with a foreign partner to develop an electric vehicle platform, with the aim of establishing Polytron as a key player in Indonesia’s EV market.”

While Mr Wibowo did not confirm the name of the overseas partner, the company is known to have signed a preliminary agreement last year to collaborate with China’s Skyworth Automobile Intelligence Company Ltd, based in Shenzhen.

Mr Wibowo confirmed Polytron plans to introduce new electric motorcycle models this year and is expanding production capacity in Kudus, in central Java, to meet growing demand for models such as the Fox S and Fox 500.
