Interfax reports that new passenger car sales in Poland grew by 19% to 28,201 units in January versus the same month a year ago thanks to soaring imports, according to figures published by market research agency Samar.

Imported car sales, which were up 46.5% year on year to 22,782 units, but sales of domestically-assembled cars fell a sharp 33% to 5,419 units in January. Import share has been rising in recent years as tariffs on imports have declined.

By company, Fiat held the leading market position with a 20.2% market share, down from 21.9% in January 2002. The company’s sales in January of this year grew by 10% year on year to 5,694 units. The Fiat Seicento was the best-selling car in January with sales of 3,617 units, 21% ahead of last year.

Skoda took the number-two position in the market with sales up 34% in January year-on-year to 3,446 units, giving the Volkswagen-owned company 12.2% of the market. The Skoda Fabia was the market’s second highest selling model.
