New car sales in Poland rose 27% year over year in September, marking a return to the growth seen earlier this year as economic recovery and lower interest rates inspired buyers, Reuters reported.

According to the news agency, market research agency Samar said on Tuesday that Toyota roared into second place for the month with 3,722 units sold, passing Volkswagen’s Skoda unit, while Toyota ousted Renault from third place for January to September.

Total new car sales, a key gauge of consumer confidence, began rising in mid-2002 and are up 12% in the first three quarters at 257,847, despite dipping in July and August, Reuters said.

“If the current pace of growth is maintained in the remaining months of the year, sales could exceed our current forecast of 340,000 vehicles, by 5,000-6,000 units,” Samar wrote in its monthly report, according to Reuters.

Citing the agency, Reuters said that despite being overtaken by Toyota, Renault has no reason to panic.

“As sales of the new version of the Megane grow, the distance behind Toyota could be made up at any moment, and Renault remains in third place in combined sales of passenger cars and commercial vehicles,” Samar wrote, Reuters said.

But despite Skoda’s continued strong performance Volkswagen continued to sputter, with year-to-date sales off 25% as its models aged and the euro’s strength against the zloty pushed up prices, the report added.

“The new Golf will really appear only at the beginning of next year, and only then will Volkswagen be able to start the battle to regain market share,” Samar said, according to Reuters.
