Indian built, but to a European specification, the i20 is expected to undercut established rivals by as much as GBP1,000 when it arrives at UK dealerships on 15 January.
UK marketing director Andrew Cullis said: “Engineers have driven the Ford Fiesta and Honda Jazz and the i20 aims to combine the best parts of these big sellers but without the premium price tag.`
“All models will boast a lengthy specification list, including air conditioning, while an all-new chassis and engine line will make this a car that’s good to drive too.”
The new powertrains, a 1.2-litre petrol delivering 75bhp and emitting just 123g/km plus a 1.4-litre diesel in 75bhp and 90bhp tunes, will be central to the car’s appeal. Both diesels will fall into the current GBP35 road tax band while a road tax-exempt Blue concept, with emissions of less than 99g/km, was also shown in Paris. Production is likely mid-2009.
