A more powerful version of the Volkswagen Group’s 4,134cc biturbo V8 is to feature in a new version of the Porsche Cayenne. The Cayenne S Diesel supplements the existing V6-engined Cayenne Diesel. It will be rolled out across mainly European markets from January.

Porsche quotes the new derivative’s power output as 382hp (281kW), with torque said to be 850Nm. A less powerful version of this engine has been available for some time in the Audi Q7 4.2 TDI.

Porsche claims the new model will sprint to 100 km/h (62mph) in 5.7 seconds, eventually reaching a top speed is 252 km/h. The NEDC fuel consumption figure is quoted as 8.3l/100 km, while the CO2 average is said to be 218g/km. The company also says this is the world’s only SUV to offer the combination of a diesel V8 and a stop-start system.

Customers are able to equip the Cayenne S Diesel with an optional 100-litre fuel tank, which Porsche says can mean up to 1,200km between refills.

While Porsche Cars North America recently added a federalised version of the Cayenne Diesel to its 2013 model year range, the Cayenne S Diesel is not expected to be sold in the US market, at least not for now.

The second generation Cayenne had its world premiere at the Geneva motor show in March 2010. Since then, multiple model variants have been added, so that there are now V6, V8 and V8 turbo engines, plus V6 and V8 turbodiesels, as well as a supercharged V6 for the Cayenne S Hybrid.
