Citroen aims to have 80% of its range electrified by 2025 and offer global vehicles adapted by local requirements.

Product chief Xavier Peugeot said the brand aims to offer vehicles suited to everyone's needs while transitioning towards alternative energies by expanding its low emission vehicle range to core markets.

At the Paris show, Citroen displayed the future PHEV version of the new C5 Aircross SUV which goes on sale from early 2020.

Peugeot said the concept was for customers looking for a two-in-one vehicle with the benefits of ZEV mode in built up areas and a combustion engine for longer journeys.

He said: "The C5 Aircross is the first in our move towards increased electrification within our model line up."

He said Citroen was betting on electrification over other technologies such as fuel cells although there were a number of things that need to happen before EV sales really take off globally.

"There  needs to be increased customer demand, changes to government rules, better infrastructure and perhaps incentives – then we will see the market accelerate."

Adapting vehicles to local market is another key plan.

Peugeot said: "You can have a worldwide strategy but not necessarily worldwide products strategy. It's no good sitting in HQ and deciding specification for markets around the world. We talk to PSA regions to define key customer expectations. The products might be similar but with local adaptations.

"For example when we launched the C5 Aircross a year ago in China it had a classic rear bench seat. For Europe there are three individual seats in the back because customers want more of an MPV feel inside the car.

"Our C3 Aircross in China has a slightly longer wheelbase than the European version because Chinese customers want more legroom in the rear."
