Octopus Energy and BYD have launched the UK’s first vehicle-to-grid (V2G) bundle, promising free home charging and cost savings for electric vehicle (EV) drivers.
The Power Pack Bundle, which includes a leased V2G-ready BYD Dolphin, a bi-directional Zaptec Pro charger, and access to a smart tariff, was announced at the Octopus Energy Tech Summit.
Priced at under £300 a month, the bundle is designed to significantly reduce annual bills for EV drivers by offering free home charging.
The innovative V2G technology allows EVs to function as “batteries on wheels”, charging during off-peak times and supplying energy back to the grid when demand is high.
Kraken, Octopus Energy Group’s tech platform, powers the fully automated process that ensures free charging for every mile driven during the lease. This integration of V2G technology directly into the vehicle eliminates the need for expensive first-generation V2G chargers and paves the way for EVs to act as mini power stations.
Octopus Electric Vehicles, a subsidiary of Octopus Energy, has grown to be the UK’s largest EV-only leasing business since its inception in 2021. The partnership between Octopus and BYD also extends to Motability Operations, making V2G technology accessible to disabled individuals nationwide.

By GlobalDataOctopus Energy Group founder Greg Jackson said: “Bi-directional charging is the game-changer for drivers and the grid. By using some of the battery’s spare capacity to help balance the grid, we can offer free driving. V2G is going to revolutionise our energy system and help drive costs down.”
BYD executive vice president Stella Li highlighted BYD’s commitment to providing sustainable technologies that allow EVs to support the grid.
Li said: “Together with Octopus Energy, we’re enabling EV owners to play an active role in the energy ecosystem, reducing costs and increasing the resilience of renewable power systems.”
The Power Pack Bundle will be available later in the year, with reservations currently open through Octopus Electric Vehicles.
BYD said the Dolphin is the first foray into Vehicle-to-Grid for the company. The electric car maker plans to integrate V2G capabilities and other smart charging features on a range of its models in future.
