Nissan Motor (Thailand) launched the locally-made X-Trail Hybrid SUV in the local market this week, priced at between THB1.25m-1.40m (US$34,900-US$39,000) – only slightly higher than conventional models.

The X-Trail Hybrid went into production last month at Nissan’s Bang Na Trat road plant in Bangkok with a local content of 70%, the company’s president, Kazutaka Nambu told local reporters.

The Bangkok facility is the second plant worldwide to produce the X-Trail Hybrid; Japan being the only other location, where it went on sale last May.

Nissan hopes to increase its share of the local mid-sized SUV market with this model, which is reflected in the low price. New excise taxes due to be introduced at the end of this year will mean that prices will increase by 5-10% next year.

The company has set a sales target of 5,000 units for the X-Trail Hybrid in Thailand for 2016, or around 60% of total expected X-Trail sales.

For the current fiscal year, ending in March 2016, Nissan expects to sell a total of 50,000 vehicles, almost 12% fewer than in the previous year.
