New car registrations were down 23.2% month on month but had risen 25.4% in June from May.

New commercial vehicle registrations during the month were 1,522, 24.5% higher than the same month last year.

The top selling make in July was Toyota with 668 new cars, followed by Ford with 502 new cars, and Holden with 441.

The Motor Industry Association (MIA) said year to date sales were 14% ahead of 2009 registrations.

“After six months of continued growth we are not surprised that the new car market has taken a very small breath” said CEO Perry Kerr. “Year to date the numbers of 34,728 are still ahead of our forecasts.  In the commercial vehicle market the positive impact of Fieldays [an annual national agricultural show] is still being felt which is encouraging for the economy as a whole.”

Year to date, Toyota remained top passenger car brand with 5,896 units, followed by Holden 3,663 and Ford 3,465. In commercial vehicles, Toyota led with 3,486 followed by Ford, 1,546 and Nissan 1,360.
