May sales of 10,064 new passenger and commercial vehicles in New Zealand reflected the current strong economic conditions there, according to trade group the Motor Industry Association.
There were 3,262 registrations of new commercial vehicles last month, a May record.

Sales of 6,802 passenger vehicles were up 455 units on May 2013. Year to date registrations rose 11% (3,574 units) to 35,776.
Commercial vehicle registrations of 3,262 units in May were up 685 units (11%) year on year. Year to date sales rose 20% (2,313 units) to 13,863.
Toyota led the total market in May with a 19% share (1,931 units) with Ford second on 11% (1,118) and General Motors’ Holden third (11%; 1,090).
Toyota was passenger car leader last month with a 15% share (996 units), followed by Holden (12%; 798) and Ford (8%; 562).
Toyota was also commercial vehicle leader with a 29% share (935 units) followed by Ford (17%; 556) and Holden (9%; 292).
The Suzuki Swift was the top selling passenger model (272 units), followed by the Toyota Corolla (4%; 241) and the Mazda CX-5 (3%; 230 units).
The Toyota Hilux was the top selling commercial model in May with 566 units sold (17% share), followed by the Ford Ranger (503 units) and Toyota Hiace (348).
Year to date the Ford Ranger was the leading commercial (2,183) followed by the Toyota Hilux (2,069).
As in neighbouring Australia, SUVs are popular in NZ. The segment accounted for 30% of sales in May, followed by pick-ups/chassis-cabs (22%) and small passenger cars (16%).
