New vehicle registrations in New Zealand last month set a record for February, according to the Motor Industry Association (MIA).

Sales rose 8% year on year to 12,358 while year to date volume was up 7.1% to 26,239.

MIA CEO David Crawford said in a statement: “The February market has benefited from recent stock arrivals and a resilient local economy where New Zealanders continue to spend what might otherwise be spent on international travel [the country’s borders remain closed] on new vehicles.”

181 pure electric vehicles, 80 PHEVs and 752 hybrids were sold last month.

Registration of 8,634 passenger vehicles and SUVs in February 2021 were up 9.1%  while commercial vehicle registrations rose 5.6% to 3,724.

The top three models in February were the Toyota Hilux (786), Mitsubishi Outlander (594) and Ford Ranger (542).

Toyota remained overall market leader with a 16% share, followed by Mitsubishi (13%) and Kia (8%). Ford also held 8% just one unit sale behind.

Mitsubishi led passenger and SUV sales with 13% followed by Toyota and Kia (12%).

Top selling passenger and SUV models were the Outlander, Kia Sportage and Kia Seltos.

Toyota regained CV market lead with a 26% slice followed by Ford (17%) and Mitsubishi (14%).

The Toyota Hilux regained the top model spot with 21% followed by the Ranger (15%) and Mitsubishi Triton (13%).

SUV Compact and SUV Medium vehicles took the largest segment shares with 22% each ahead of Pick Up/Chassis 4×4 (14%).
