The registration of new cars in New Zealand saw double-digit growth in May over the preceeding month. However, the total fell below volumes registered in May last year.

The New Zealand Transport Agency said that 3,979 cars were registered in May, up 12.9% over April but down 29.3% over May last year.
Commercial vehicle registrations, meanwhile, reached 1,293 in May, up 9.2% from April but 33.3% down on the same month last year.
The New Zealand car market has been been through particularly volatile few months, with new car sales falling in April whilst growing in March. February, meanwhile, hit an 11-year low, when new passenger car registrations of 3,795 units represented a 28% fall on January’s and a massive 38.5% fall compared with February 2008.
