October new car registrations took the New Zealand market year to date tally past last year’s 64,019 vehicles to 64,285 units. October sales were the second strongest this year and up 35% (1,908 units) on October 2011 – 7,336 versus 5,428.
Year to date, passenger car sales are up 11,236 units (21.2%) from 53,049 to 64,285.

Commercial vehicles sales were up 454 units year on year in October from 1,598 to 2,052. Year to date, this segment is 13.4% (2,391) ahead of 2011 – from 17,787 units last year to 20,178 units.
Perry Kerr, CEO of the Motor Industry Association, said all MIA members were happy with the way the market is performing.
“The global and local industry has faced its fair share of challenges over the past three years. All of which have impacted on sales. We have now climbed out of the hole and are back on a firm footing and will be very close to, if not breaking, the 100,000 unit mark for new vehicle sales, putting us back to the levels we saw prior to the global financial crisis,” he said.
Toyota topped passenger car sales with 1,862 units, Ford was second with 928, followed by General Motors’ Holden with 720.
In the commercial segment the top three positions were Toyota (585), Ford (261) and Nissan (227).
The Toyota Corolla was the top selling model with 846 registrations followed by the Ford Focus (344), Toyota Hilux (334) and Suzuki Swift (299).
