Florida based startup Nuvola Technology said it had filed a patent for a material which, it claimed, “eliminates” the primary cause of lithium ion battery fires.

The separator coating is sprayed and protects electrodes from thermal runaway and potential fire.

Thermal runaway occurs when a cell short circuits and heats up uncontrollably.

EV battery fires are rare but pose greater challenges due to the amount of water needed to extinguish them, as well the risk of electric shock to emergency responders. There are also concerns of fires will re-ignite once put out.

Nuvola said SafeCoat was under evaluation by several unnamed battery and car makers and expected to be used in 2025.
