Ford of Europe has revealed the new Mondeo at a special preview event in Amsterdam. The availability of the 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol engine is the main innovation.

The car is closely related to the Fusion sold in the Americas but the Mondeo has many engineering differences, including turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, plus of course the five-door hatchback and wagon body styles.

Ford believes that by making the 125PS version of its 1.0 EcoBoost engine available in the Mondeo, it will have the class leader for CO2 (130g/km) and average fuel economy. The turbocharged three-cylinder motor is already available in Ford of Europe’s Focus, B-MAX, C-MAX and Fiesta but it has never been fitted to a vehicle as large and heavy as the Mondeo.

The 1.0-litre EcoBoost is the most power-dense production engine the company has ever built. With an engine block small enough to sit on a piece of A4 paper, it produces a claimed 170Nm of torque (and up to 200Nm in overboost mode), delivered from 1,450rpm.

Unlike many of its rivals, which have been eliminating five-door hatchbacks in the D-segment, Ford of Europe will offer three body styles for the new Mondeo (the hatchback and estate at launch in UK).

The new model will not go on sale in European markets until September/October 2013.
