The rumours of a bespoke six-cylinder engine for its forthcoming supercar have proved to be true, or at least the MC20 being the first Maserati to be powered by a 600-plus horsepower biturbo engine.
Until its existence was revealed in February along with the announcement of a model name, a so-called ‘Supersportiva’ was a secret project within Maserati. And although the engine’s details are revealed today (1 July), the vehicle itself will not be seen until 9 September, delayed from May. The February media release also claimed that “Maserati will return to the world of racing with the new MC20”.
The MC20 (‘Maserati Corse 2020’) will be mid-engined and powered by a biturbo 3.0-litre engine which is manufactured in Modena. Named Nettuno (Neptune in English), this 90-degree dry-sump V6 has two spark plugs per cylinder. It produces a claimed 457 kW (621 PS/630 CV) and 730 Nm (538 lb ft). Nettuno is compliant with EU6D, China 6B and Ulev 70 emissions norms.
It would be astonishing if some form of electrification isn’t announced in the 2020s for other Maseratis and potentially the MC20 too. Variants will also surely power future Alfa Romeo models.
The trident logo company will update the media on its plans during 9 and 10 September. This will be at a special event in Modena called ‘MMXX: The time to be audacious’.
Further details about Nettuno, including an English language video from Matteo Valentini, the chief engineer, can be found here.
