Mitsubishi Motors’ Canadian importer has revealed a lengthened Mirage powered by a new 1.2 litre engine at the Montreal motor show. The car will be launched locally, and possibly also in the US, from the third quarter.

The Mirage for North America will be built in Thailand but the model name is yet to be stated. Mitsubishi Canada refers to the car it showed in Montreal as a “new subcompact” for the 2014 model year. Until now, the only engine offered in the Mirage has been a 1.0-litre three-cylinder petrol unit but the show car was stated as being powered by a 74hp 1.2, also with three cylinders.

The Mirage is said by its maker to be 3,710mm long, 1,665mm wide and 1,490mm high but the Canadian importer states the following equivalent dimensions for its 2014 model year car: 3,780mm, 1665mm and 1500mm. The extra length comes from larger bumper modules, while the headlamps are also new and incorporate the legally required orange filters for the side reflectors.

In October 2012, Mitsubishi Motors announced an expansion programme for its Thai plants. The newest of the three, which builds the Mirage, would see its annual capacity rise to 200,000 units from 150,000, the firm stated.

The Mirage had its global debut at the Tokyo motor show in November 2011. After launches in multiple countries in Asia during 2012, it is soon to be rolled out across European markets. The UK media preview event is due to take place in March.
