Mobilize, the brand of Renault Group, and Autostrade per l’Italia (ASPI), through its subsidiary Free To X, have formed a strategic alliance aimed at powering sustainable mobility in Italy.
This follows the initial framework agreement announced on 14 January 2025, which has now received the necessary regulatory approvals.
The collaboration focuses on the development of fast-charging infrastructure across the country, with Mobilize acquiring a significant stake in Free To X.
The partnership’s goal is to expand the fast-charging network, with Mobilize tasked with accelerating the deployment of charging infrastructure outside of ASPI’s motorway network.
ASPI, meanwhile, maintains control over the charging stations along its motorways.
Free To X, a leading high-power charging (HPC) network in Italy, operates over 110 charging stations, mainly situated on highways and at premium locations.

By GlobalDataThese stations, now partly owned by Mobilize, are capable of delivering up to 400kW of power and are open to all e-mobility service providers.
The strategic alliance ensures that these stations, powered by renewable energy, are well-positioned to meet the increasing demand for EV charging services.
The charging stations along the Autostrade per l’Italia motorway network are strategically placed at an average distance of about 50km from each other, surpassing the European targets for charging infrastructure density.
Mobilize CEO Gianluca De Ficchy said: “Mobilize’s strategic alliance with Free To X is instrumental in advancing the European electric vehicle ecosystem. By expanding the network of charging stations across Europe, we are paving the way for a seamless transition to electric mobility, making it more accessible and convenient for everyone.
“As the energy and automotive sectors become increasingly interconnected, the partnership with Free To X provides Mobilize with fast-track access to the Italian EV charging market. Moreover, it enables Renault Group to generate recurring revenues within the evolving landscape of the automotive value chain.”
