Mitsubishi Motors plans to establish a new software innovation centre in Tokyo to improve its software development capabilities for new vehicles.

The new centre, to be opened in "fiscal year 2019", will operate as a satellite of the R&D centre at the Okazaki car plant in Japan.

MMC expects growing demand for vehicles with preventive safety functions as well as models with increased electrification and other low-emission systems.

The company also wants to develop autonomous driving and connectivity. The software will also be used with current electrified and all-wheel drive technology.

The new centre will combine the environment needed for software development with the ability to coordinate seamlessly with R&D on development.

Utilizing an "advantageous location" in Tokyo, the office will, MMC said, "employ international talent, create deeper connections between in-house developers and external organizations. It will ultimately accelerate software development that reinforces the technical capabilities and driving characteristics that customers expect from Mitsubishi Motors".
