Mitsubishi launched its redone, sixth generation Triton (nee L200) pickup truck at a world press event in Bangkok this week, the first complete overhaul for the truck in eight years.

The new model is based on a completely re-engineered ladder chassis and suspension system and comes with a new 2.4-litre variable geometry turbodiesel engine and Super Select 4WD-II system. The engine has a maximum power output of 181hp at 3,500rpm and comes with a choice of six speed manual shift by wire gearbox with reduced vibration and a six speed automatic transmission.

A more powerful 204hp engine was expected to be available later.

The truck has a larger body than its predecessor and an aggressive, new front grille to express the “toughness and power expected from a pickup truck”.

Mitsubishi Motors (Thailand) plans to produce around 200,000 Tritons per year at one of its plants in Chonburi, near Bangkok, and export it to 100 markets – including Japan from early 2024, after an absence of 12 years.

It will initially be available in three main variants – Single Cab High-Rider 4WD and Double Cab High-Rider 2WD and 4WD.
