A four-day strike taking place at Volkswagen’s Puebla plant is starting to affect operations at other companies in the state and throughout Mexico.

In recent years, 82 autoparts companies — which supply Volkswagen — have set up operations in the Puebla industrial park in which Volkswagen’s assembly plant is located.

There are also 300 other suppliers throughout the country that also supply the Puebla plant, though not exclusively, and the strike is causing contingency problems for the industry as a whole.

Mexican National Autoparts Industry Director of Market Analysis Felix Rojas said Volkswagen and other companies with auto-assembly operations in Mexico were the reason more than 1.4 billion dollars was invested in the nation’s autoparts industry last year.
