Independent
Mexican importers are sneaking tiny Smart citycars from Europe into their country
under the noses of DaimlerChrysler’s official distributor, the Mexico City
paper Reforma reported.

The paper said the unofficial importers are making the most of import quotas
set by the Mexican Economy ministry as a result of the Mexico-EU free trade
agreement put in place in July 2000.

Reforma added that the official DaimlerChrysler importer is refusing to service
or supply parts for privately imported Smarts.
