Maserati workers at Mirafiori in Turin will be placed on reduced hours contracts for the rest of the year, unions told Reuters.
The changes would affect up to 968 people on the Maserati line and were because of the timing of the switch to new models.
Reuters noted such contracts are introduced in Italy when output falls and trade a cut in pay for part-time working.
Luigi Paone, general secretary of the Uilm union in Turin, told the news agency the “situation was getting ever more complicated for workers in the auto sector” in the city.
Stellantis confirmed plans for Maserati workers to Reuters which added it had already scaled back operations at Mirafiori since February because of weak demand for the electric Fiat 500.
Media reports suggested this week Fiat might add (return) combustion engines to the 500 model line.
