Marelli has announced a “strategic partnership” with US-based power conversion semiconductor company Transphorm.
This will give Marelli access to power converter, onboard charger and inverter technology for electric and hybrid vehicles, the supplier said.
Transphorm claims to lead the gallium nitride (GaN) sector with its devices for high voltage power conversion and has automotive GaN experience, especially in Japan.
Marelli will use the technology in its electric powertrain business.
“Direct investment in power electronics of this kind will mean a substantial step… with higher efficiency and lower system costs, eventually resulting in benefits for customers and final consumers,” it said in a statement.
It will develop new automotive/EV power conversion products including OBCs (on-board chargers), DC-DC converters and powertrain inverters.
Transphorm will cooperate only with Marelli for two years to enable such development.
