Volkswagen Group Malaysia is confident of topping its record sales of 13,000 cars this year, according to managing director Zeno Kerschbaumer. “Last year, we sold a record 13,003 units. We started from a small base,” he told the local Business Times. “We hope to do well again this year. So far, in the first four months of this year, we’ve sold 4,572 units, about 37% more than the same four months last year.” The best-selling model this year to date was the Beetle 1.4 TSI. Volkswagen Group Malaysia recently launched 11 new models. The company also entered the hybrid and diesel segments with the launch of two SUVs, the Touareg TDI and Hybrid. Last year’s record sales were also fuelled by the opening of 10 more dealerships, bringing the total number to 22. One factor that has driven sales of the Volkswagen marques is the assembly of Passat and Polo at DRB-HICOM Bhd’s plant in Pekan, Pahang. The move has allowed cars to be more competitively priced, said Kerschbaumer.
