New vehicle sales in Malaysia rose by 7.4% to 69,401 units in December, from 64,638 units in the same month of last year, according to data compiled by the Malaysian Automotive Association.

Passenger vehicle sales amounted to 61,132 units last month and commercial vehicles 8,269 units.

Full year sales were flat at 666,674 units in 2015, compared with 666,465 units in 2014, with sharply lower sales in the first half of the year offset by a strong second half recovery. 

Passenger vehicle sales rose by 0.5% to 588,341 units last year, while commercial vehicle sales were 3.5% lower at 75,376 units.

Perodua was the best selling vehicle brand with 213,307 sales; followed by Proton with 102,175 units; Honda 94,902 units; Toyota 93,760 units; and Nissan 47,235 units.

The MAA expects a moderate decline in total vehicle sales in 2016, of around 2.5% to 650,000 units, reflecting the slower economic growth outlook for both the domestic and global economy. It was particularly wary of falling crude oil prices and slowing growth in China.
