New vehicle sales in Malaysia fell by 2.1% to 52,312 units in August, from 53,452 units in the same month of last year, according to data released by the Malaysian Automotive Association (MAA).
The market looks to have normalised after the sharp decline in July due to the annual holiday of Eid. Underlying demand remains weak, however, reflecting record sales in previous years and the sharp slowdown in economic growth in the country.
Passenger vehicle sales were down by 2.3% at 46,223 units last month, while commercial vehicle sales fell by 1% to 6,089 units.
Vehicle production was sharply lower in August, by 12% to 43,452 units from 49,335 units a year ago.
In the first eight months of the year, total vehicle sales fell by 14.8% to 370,242 units from 434,390 units previously.
