Proton has reportedly seen a jump in its ‘Xchange Programme’ since the government announced the RM5,000 rebate for customers scrapping their old cars aged 10 years and above to buy national cars.

According to The Edge newspaper, Proton’s managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir said many people had shown interest in Proton’s own programme that had been implemented in 2007, with an average increase of 300% in participation levels.

“This level of acceptance of the programme is most encouraging because we believe this tool is beneficial for the ‘ecosystem’ of the automotive industry as it now stimulates the industry through additional demand for new cars in disposing of the old cars,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Under the scheme, customers can purchase any new Proton car at a RM5,000 discount, except for the Exora which is yet to be launched, but will soon be included in the programme.

These vouchers are to be given to car owners, who trade in their cars that are more than 10 years old and/or are lower than the trade-in value of RM5,000.
