The locally-assembled Hyundai Elantra will be formally launched on August 23 in
Kuala Lumpur at the headquarters of Malaysian distributor Wisma Kah Motor, AutoAsia
Online reported.

The Malaysian company owns 60% of Oriental-Hyundai Sdn. Bhd., a joint venture
with Hyundai Motor, which produced its first CKD Lantra last week.

AutoAsia Online said that Oriental’s 36,000-unit capacity plant has in the
past relied heavily on Honda for work but the Japanese maker has formed a new
company to build its Malaysian cars in a new factory.

Oriental is involved in this venture but only holds a 15% stake and is not
in a position to influence events – hence the deal with Hyundai, the website
said.

It has taken the partners little more than six months to take the Elantra project
from concept to Job One. Oriental invested $US1.8 million setting up a dedicated
production line for the Elantra.
