The New Straits Times, without citing any sources, said that GM representatives had met with Proton management several times since November.

The Malaysian government, which owns 59% of Proton, has been seeking a strategic partner for the business.
Volkswagen and PSA Peugeot Citroen have held talks with the company and PSA announced last September it had signed a letter of intent with Proton, to study possible co-operation between the two manufacturers.
PSA said that the study would focus on areas such as product development, manufacturing, quality initiatives, vendor development, contract assembly and distribution.
