Daihatsu Motor has created a new company, Akashi-Kikai Malaysia, which will build automatic transmissions. This will be the first such plant to be erected in the country.
Daihatsu’s partners in the new joint venture firm are Akashi-Kikai Industry Company and Perodua, the Daihatsu-controlled and Malaysia-based vehicle manufacturer.

The facility will be erected within the Sendayan Industrial Park in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan State. The stated annual capacity is to be 150,000 transmissions per annum.
Construction of the JV’s manufacturing plant will start in March, with operations slated to commence in November 2013. Daihatsu notes in its announcement that while the ratio of automobiles with automatic gearboxes is high in the Malaysian market, to date no automaker has manufactured ATs itself locally.
Akashi-Kikai supplies drive-line units, including continuously variable transmissions for Daihatsu’s Japanese market operations.
