Malaysia’s second national car company Perodua and Japanese partner Daihatsu Motor plan to jointly invest MYR600m (US$186m) in a new engine manufacturing plant in Sendayan, in the Malaysian state of Negeri Sembilan.

Construction is scheduled to start in September 2014 and be completed next year. It will have an annual production capacity of 140,000 and will employ 150 people.

Daihatsu will contribute 51% of the cost and Perodua 49%. A separate company will be set up, with paid up capital of MYR165m, which will also have parts design and manufacturing capabilities and will be responsible for local parts outsourcing.

The plant will be built near the newly completed automatic transmission plant controlled by Daihatsu’s subsidiary Akashi Kikai, in which Daihatsu and Perodua have minority shareholdings. This plant has a production capacity of 150,000 units per year.
