Chery Auto is to establish an assembly plant in Malaysia. The production hub will also be used for exports to other right-hand drive countries.

Paul Ng, the Chinese manufacturer’s chief executive, says the company has identified a location for the plant in central Malaysia and is awaiting approval from the government. A potential investment of MYR250m (US$78.7m) over a five-year period was also mentioned by Ng in the report, which was carried by Bernama.

“We plan to turn Malaysia into our main automotive hub in producing right-hand drive vehicles and expect the first phase of the plant to be ready by 2015,” he added, according to the state news agency’s report.

Ng also said that the plant will serve as the focal point for exports to Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia and Pakistan.
