Mahindra & Mahindra has launched mild hybrid technology called 'Intelli-Hybrid' in its redesigned Scorpio.

The Scorpio intelli-hybrid retails for around INR1,284,000 (US$19,073) for the top-end S10 2WD version.

M&M said Intelli-hybrid reduces fuel consumption by up to 7% by assisting the engine with electric power during acceleration, automatically switching the engine off while the vehicle is stationary (start-stop) and capturing brake energy, which would otherwise be wasted, to recharge the battery.

It's claimed to be the Indian industry's first SUV with mild hybrid capability. Previous claimed model firsts included a voice messaging system, a CRDe (diesel) engine and with six-speed automatic transmission and use of micro hybrid, start-stop technology.

Pravin Shah, president and chief executive (automotive), Mahindra & Mahindra said: "As an organisation that places keen emphasis on sustainability and eco-friendly practices, across every process and product, we are proud to introduce mild hybrid technology on the Scorpio."

The intelli-hybrid system is available on variants with the 2.2 litre mHAWK engine.
