LG Electronics announced it had gained recognition as an international certification institute for testing the functional safety of automotive software, as part of its continued expansion into the global automotive sector

The South Korean company said its software testing centre had been accredited by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme as an institute qualified to verify ISO 26262-6 standards which focus on the functional safety of electrical or electronic systems installed in vehicles.

The certification is accepted by 70 countries, including the United States and Japan, under the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation’s mutual recognition arrangement.

The accreditation will allow LG Electronics to more efficiently test and certify the quality and safety of its automotive technology and will help strengthen its automotive division, which current focuses on infotainment and electronics for powertrains and lighting systems. Future areas of growth include autonomous driving and connected technology.

South Korea has emerged as the world’s second largest spender on semiconductor equipment in the second quarter of 2021, behind China, as major suppliers in the country such as Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix look to address the global semiconductor shortage.

Industry data showed the country increased spending on chip making equipment by 48% year-on-year to US$6.6bn in the second quarter, compared with US$8.2bn by China.

South Korea’s spending dropped by 9% from US$7.3bn in the first quarter, however, when the country ranked first in terms of investment in the sector.
