Lear Corporation has announced that Dr. André Weimerskirch has been appointed vice president, cyber security for e-systems, effective immediately. The announcement comes as cyber-security is emerging as a major challenge for the auto industry as connectivity systems in the vehicles proliferate.

“We are extremely pleased to add someone with Dr. Weimerskirch’s stature and industry expertise in automotive cyber security to our e-systems team. As an industry leader in electrical power and data management, we want to ensure the highest level of integrity and security of the electrical signals and wireless data we manage. André is a renowned industry expert in cyber security, and will provide Lear with a competitive advantage in vehicle electrical systems as we deploy our vehicle connectivity strategy,” said Matt Simoncini, Lear’s president and chief executive officer.

Lear said that Weimerskirch brings a “vast array of technical and specialised knowledge in creating security architectures ensuring data integrity, privacy, and authenticity for connected car communications, including vehicle-to-vehicle applications”. Most recently, he was leading vehicle cyber security research at the University of Michigan. He has published numerous articles on various aspects of cyber security and is widely recognised as an industry expert in the field of vehicle cyber security. 

Weimerskirch continues to serve as the chair of several industry organisations, including the prestigious escar cyber security conference. Previously he was the CEO of Escrypt Inc, Escrypt and has further experience at Ruhr-University Bochum. 

Weimerskirch will be responsible for driving Lear’s global cyber security technology strategy and implementation. His focus will include developing a holistic approach to automotive cyber security while aligning Lear’s security technologies with customer and industry requirements by integrating strategy, planning, development and implementation processes. 

Weimerskirch received a bachelor of science degree in computer science from Darmstadt University, a master of science in computer science from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, a master of business administration from Henley Business School and a doctorate degree in electrical engineering and information technology from Ruhr-University Bochum.
