Sales of imported vehicles in South Korea fell by 17.7% year-on-year to 16,778 units in September, from 20,381 units a year earlier, according to the data released by the Korea Automobile Importers and Distributors Association (KAIDA).

The backlash from the Volkswagen group’s emissions scandal clearly continues to be felt in the market, with Volkswagen brand sales falling by close to 94% to 184 units last month from 2,901 units a year earlier, while Audi’s sales were more than 85% lower at 506 units compared with 3,401 units previously.

Earlier this year the government withdrew certifications on some 80 Volkswagen and Audi models due to mis-stated fuel-efficiency and emissions claims.

Other key import brands reported mixed results last month, with Mercedes-Benz enjoying a 17.5% rise in sales to 5,087 units, while BMW’s sales fell by 13.5% to 3,031 units. Land Rover sales increased fivefold to 957 units, while Toyota reported a rise of almost 29% to 742 units,

In the first nine months of the year total import sales fell by 7.8% to 165,189 units, from 179,120 units in the same period of last year.
