The first quarter saw sales of 32,833 new vehicles while the second saw 20,866.

The Motor Industry Association said June reflected a "steady but weaker market compared to 2019".

"Sales of both passenger and commercial vehicles were down, confirmation the market is tightening its belt in a recession," chief executive David Crawford said.

Pure electric vehicles continued their modest rate of monthly registrations with 131 units in June while 54 PHEVs and 590 hybrids were sold.

Registrations of 7,411 passenger vehicles and SUVs were down 15.3% year on year while commercial vehicle registrations fell 21.2% to 4,103.

The top three models in June were all pickup trucks – Ford Ranger (641 units), Toyota Hilux (595) and Holden Colorado (482).

Toyota remained overall market leader with 16% market share (1,874 units), followed by Holden (9%, 995) and Ford (8%, 868 units).
