The MOU will focus on ensuring conditions for an electric vehicle mass market are in place, particularly government incentives, charging infrastructure and public education, although details of any potential financial help are not yet available.

A working group will now study the implementation of an electric vehicle pilot programme, potentially within the Greater Amman municipality.

“I firmly believe we have an obligation to our future generations to take the necessary actions towards a greener world,” said Jordanian minister of environment Hazem Malhas.

“The introduction of electric cars offers many advantages, not only for the environment, but also from an economic, social and national security perspective.”

Nissan and Jordan will also examine renewable energy for electric vehicle charging using solar energy and the use of second-life batteries

Jordan will also consider purchasing up to 300 Nissan Leaf EVs for its public sector.
