Mitsubishi Motors on Thursday said a recall of about 243,000 of its vehicles in Japan would cost $US44 million, but that it would not affect MMC’s earnings outlook for the just-ended business year, Reuters reported.

According to Reuters, Mitsubishi had said, a day earlier, it would recall six models including 179,730 Chariot Grandis (Space Wagon) built between October 1997 and February, and 43,972 RVR (Space Runner) made from November 1997 to August due to faulty brakes and fuel tanks.
A Mitsubishi spokesman told the news agency that no recall has been issued outside Japan because no defects have been reported.
But Mitsubishi told Reuters it was “strongly urging” the recall of the main export model Chariot Grandis (sold as the Space Wagon). If Mitsubishi recalls the 60,100 units exported, mostly to Europe, that would cost another 700 million yen, the spokesman added.
The four other models to be recalled are the Minicab pickup truck, Legnum station wagon, and Galant and Aspire cars, Reuters said.
