The Toyota subsidiary Central Motor began construction of a new head office and car plant in the village of Ohira, Miyagi Prefecture today (22 December).

The new facilities are due to open in autumn 2010 and the plant is projected to turn out 120,000 vehicles a year. However, plans may alter given the current economic uncertainty, the company has said.
At a groundbreaking ceremony, Central Motor president Kanji Ishii said: ”We will work hard for further economic development of (Miyagi Prefecture).”
Miyagi governor Yoshihiro Murai said: ”I offer my sincere gratitude to Central Motor because it will become a major pillar that will help the Miyagi economy prosper.”
